Any good survey of economists' forecasts usually includes a question about the "biggest worry" on the horizon, and such was the case recently in one of the largest and most closely followed forecasting surveys. While the consensus of The Wall Street Journal's
54 hand-picked economists was for continued modest growth in 2007, more than one-third agreed in an April survey that the identity of "Economy Enemy No. 1" was not "weakness in the housing market." Instead, this group's biggest worry was "weakness in business spending."

Financial Market Outlook Easy Money
When subprime mortgage woes burst on the public radar screen back in February, media speculation arose that this could be the last straw, weighty enough to take the economy down. “We finally have a threat that really does bear watching—namely, a potential credit crunch precipitated by the housing downturn and rising default rates,” stated the characteristically upbeat editors of the Wall Street Journal. In an article titled “How Expansions Die,” they warned “…if banks continue to be hit by defaults, it may constrain their lending in other areas. Credit spreads, which have remained remarkably narrow, could widen.”
